Who Owns the Problem? Employer vs Accountant vs Payroll Relief Support

Payroll Problems Get Slower When They Reach the Wrong Person

A payroll coordinator notices a problem and immediately searches:

“Payroll Relief support.”

Sometimes that is appropriate.

Often it is not.

Payroll Relief sits inside a relationship between the employer and the accounting/payroll firm.

Some problems require somebody inside the employer.

Some require the firm’s administrator.

Some require the payroll professional processing the payroll.

And some really are software-support questions.

Contact the employer internally when the software is showing the information it received

Examples:

  • manager submitted wrong hours;
  • bonus was never authorized;
  • employee’s legal address provided to payroll is wrong;
  • nobody told payroll about a new hire;
  • department assignment needs business confirmation.

Software support cannot decide whether an employee worked 38 or 42 hours.

That is a business fact.

Resolve the fact first.

Contact the accountant/payroll provider when the payroll itself must change

Examples:

  • payroll has already been submitted;
  • a calculated amount looks wrong;
  • employee was omitted;
  • payroll requires an adjustment;
  • approval timing is in question;
  • a direct-deposit issue affects the current payroll;
  • an additional/off-cycle payroll may be required.

These are operational payroll issues.

If the employer does not possess the relevant permissions, only the payroll firm may be able to perform the required action.

Contact the firm administrator for permission and administrative issues

IRIS documentation says employer access and permissions are administered through the firm-side setup. It also states that certain sensitive changes, including employee direct-deposit setup changes, are restricted to firm administrators.

Examples:

  • employer user needs different access;
  • client login administration;
  • employer cannot see a function that should be permitted;
  • employee banking setup requires an administrative change.

A support technician cannot necessarily grant permissions that belong to the accounting firm’s administrator.

Use official software support for genuine platform problems

Examples:

  • a documented screen fails to load;
  • system-generated error prevents processing;
  • official feature behaves inconsistently with current documentation;
  • application outage;
  • unexplained technical failure affecting authorized users.

Payroll Relief includes formal support mechanisms inside the product.

IRIS documentation describes a Support icon that can open support requests and may provide access to resources such as live chat, user forums and training videos.

IRIS Agent is now part of the current support environment

A June 2026 Payroll Relief release introduced IRIS Agent, an AI-powered in-product assistant intended to answer support questions and route users toward the Support Team when needed. IRIS stated that it became available to all users beginning July 1, 2026.

Because this feature is current and may evolve, verify the latest release documentation rather than relying on an old screenshot.

Send a useful support request

Bad:

“Payroll Relief isn’t working.”

Better:

Employer: Smith Manufacturing
Payroll: Weekly payroll, pay date August 21
Stage: Calculated, not approved
User role: Employer payroll coordinator
Problem: Review Payroll opens, but employee 214 is missing despite being active
Expected result: Employee should appear on Standard Payroll
Steps already checked: Employee assigned to weekly pay schedule

That reduces the number of questions somebody must ask before investigating.

Never send credentials in an ordinary support message

Do not email:

  • passwords;
  • complete SSNs;
  • bank account credentials.

Use provider-approved secure methods for sensitive payroll information.

A simple routing rule

Ask three questions.

Is the underlying business fact wrong?

Start inside the employer.

Does payroll need to be changed?

Start with the payroll/accounting professional.

Does the software itself appear to be malfunctioning?

Use the official software-support channel.

That simple triage system can resolve payroll problems faster than searching randomly for another phone number.
